Machiavelli’s political philosophy was narrowly place-specific and time-specific.

Machiavelli, known as Italy's Chanakya, was born after the medieval period. Which was greatly influenced by the situation at that time.

According to Sabine, Machiavelli's ideas were heavily influenced by his country and times. Because of the Renaissance, he was an opponent of the Church but not an opponent of religion.

At the time of Machiavelli, Italy was divided into 5 different provinces and the greater influence of the Church was evident. Which was the internal problem of Italy. France and England existed as his external problems. All these circumstances influenced the thoughts of Machiavelli.

Machiavelli said in The Prince that a prince should not be religious. But it should be moral. If necessary, he should resort to deceit, lies, punishment etc.

A prince should have the strength of a lion and the cunning of a fox. Because he talked about establishing the unity of Italy, therefore in his view it is necessary to have a powerful prince for the unity of Italy. Who can protect himself from all internal and external threats.

Machiavelli clearly said that the biggest obstacle in the unity of Italy is the Church, which will neither unite it itself nor allow it to be united through someone else.

Impressed by these thoughts of Machiavelli, Hacker said that Machiavelli invented policy science, not political science.

Machiavelli said that the main reason for the disintegration of Italy is the presence of selfish people in Italy, so he suggested the establishment of a powerful prince like France and England.

In The Prince, Machiavelli supported the monarchy. But in his second work 'Discharges on Livy', he supported the republic and said that the people of Switzerland are moral, so republican rule is appropriate there.

Machiavelli's thoughts were greatly influenced by the situation and the time. He presented the illustration of statecraft. That's why Machiavelli's ideas are relevant in the modern age. He is definitely a child of his era but his ideas will always be in use.

Utkarsh Dwivedi IAS   air-5 UPsc cse 2021 PSIR STRATEGY, NOTES AND MY ANSWER COPIES If there is one factor that has helped me achieve a single digit rank in CSE, it is my optional. I have scored 168 in paper 1 and 146 in paper 2, making it 314 in total. I have still not come across somebody with a score more than this and hence a comfortable claim can be made that this is one of the highest score this year. In this blog, I would mention what helped me achieve this score.  I DID NOT refer to any other source than Shubhra Ma'am's notes. There are two reasons to it.  Firstly, since I had reached the interview stage in all my three attempts, I never had the luxury of time to refer to any book.  Secondly, I believe Ma'am's notes are more than enough to form the core aspect of the subject's preparation. I did value addition from multiple sources so as to get an edge in my answers: I referred to copies of toppers of the respective tests that I attempted during my mains ...
