UKRAINE - Donetsk/Luhansk

What are the breakaway regions? Russian-backed separatists in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions – collectively known as the Donbass – broke away from Ukrainian government control in 2014 and proclaimed themselves independent “people’s republics”, until now unrecognised.  Since then, Ukraine says about 15,000 people have been killed in fighting. Russia denies being a party to the conflict but has backed the separatists in numerous ways, including through covert military support, financial aid, supplies of COVID-19 vaccines and the issue of at least 800,000 Russian passports to residents. Moscow has always denied planning to invade Ukraine. \What does Russian recognition mean?  World Migration Report 2022   • It is released by the UN affiliated International Organization for Migration (IOM).  It is released every two years once Findings of the 2022 report 1) 30.7 million new displacements were triggered by disasters in 145 countries and territories 2) Total internal displacement due to disaster, conflict and violence has increased in comparison to 2019, despite containment due to the novel corona virus disease (COVID-19) pandemic in 2020: To 40.5 million in 2020, from 31.5 million in 2019.  3) Storms accounted for 14.6 million displacements and floods for 14.1 million.   4) Extreme temperatures have displaced some 46,000 people anew; droughts caused new displacement of 32,000 people in 2020. #Environment
