LAWS RELATED TO ELECTIONS IN INDIA 


The Representation of the People Act (RPA), 1950 

• This act provides for the allocation of seats in the House of the People,  allocation of seats to the States in the House of the People and the number of seats, total number of seats in Legislative Assemblies and assembly constituencies. 

• The act also has provisions for the Election Commission appointed by the President under article 324. 


The Representation of People Act, 1951 

• This act provides for the provisions for the process of actual conduct of elections in India. 

• The act has provisions for different electoral matters like registration of political parties, Notification of general elections, conduct of elections, qualification and disqualification norms for the members of the Parliament and State Legislature. 


Constitutional Articles: 

• Articles 80 and 170 of the Constitution provides the provisions for the maximum number of seats in the Parliament and Legislative Assemblies of States. 

• Article 171 lays down the maximum and minimum numbers of seats in the Legislative Councils of a State.
